- Abstract: Large buildings such as hydro power plants in the lower part of river Sava need to be studied using a physical hydraulic model, since the flow conditions around the objects are so specific that special tests on smaller scale models are required. This article presents the hydraulic model studies of the construction pit for HPP Brežice on a physical spatial model. The research was focused on optimising the shape of the diversion channel, optimising the lining of diversion channel and the riverbank; and optimizing the height of the edges of the construction pit. We established a model with a mobile bed so that we were able to study the erosion processes of the bottom and banks of the diversion channel. The results show that the erosion in the diversion channel is present already at the flow of Q = 500 m3/s, while increased flows of the Sava river increase the speed of the erosion. Because the eroded material is deposited downstream in the Sava river in the area of the planned deepening, it was suggested that the diversion channel should be excavated to the solid bedrock. Special attention was given to the routing of the water flow from the diversion channel through the spillways of the dam, which will also be a big engineering challenge because of the large water level difference. Based on the given boundary conditions, we determined the limit parameters that still allow the execution of the rerouting. Precisely timed sequence for closing of the diversion channel was determined for the most optimal technological solution.
